6☆ Date with Jesse - Blazing Dance (炽之圆舞) | Light and Night 光与夜之恋
Disclaimer: This card is differently spicy, not NSFW-kind of spicy but there are ambiguous feelings. It'd feel different if you're also listening to the BGM.
For those who are here not knowing much about Jesse, he's a childhood friend of MC who is 2 years younger than her (currently 21 years old). MC 'saved' him from being bullied when he was 5, and ever since he's like a puppy to her. Unfortunately due to family circumstances he moved to Europe and lost contact with her. He's now debuted as an internationally famous theater actor, and reunited with MC in Chapter 8 of Main Story (feel free to check my full list of existing main story translations here).

It's late autumn, and the parasol tree on both sides of the streets are covering the sunlight, dying a dazzling golden color onto the scenery before me.
After work has ended, I took a relaxing stroll in the historical Sevillian city as I enjoy a leisure time that is hard to get by.
The area of the city center is called Santa Cruz, it's famous for its crisscrossed streets and alleys. Both sides of the street are full of candy-colored buildings of different heights, and the shops along the streets have delicate enameled signboards hanging in front of them, showing off the gorgeously passionate Southern European style.
As I walked, something suddenly didn't feel right.
You: Why do I feel like I've just came to this place just now...
It's clear that my sense of direction is still as terrible as usual. Just when I was about to open the map on my phone, my ringtone have instead rang before I could do anything. An unexpected name appeared on the screen.
You: Tangyuan? It's probably still early morning over there, no? Are you already awake?
Jesse: Mhm, I'm awake super early. How's it, was everything going well at work?
You: Very smoothly! I visited some famous fabric experts in Seville a few days ago, and I've already chose some fabric that are suitable for the recycling theme.
Jesse: That's great! Then you can properly enjoy your holiday for the next two days, right?
Jesse's voice traveling over the phone waves are sounding light and upbeat, leaping like the specks of light passing through the shades of the trees to my eyes, it feels like his smile is just right before me.
You: Haha, why do you sound so happy? I'm simply strolling around at the old city area, this row of orange-reddish colored buildings at the sides of this street are exceptionally beautiful. It's just that the roads here are all in twists and turns, it feels like I'm back to where I was...
Jesse: Looks like your sense of direction is still the same as ever. Let me guess, you're definitely at Santa Cruz, the streets there are exceptionally complicated, it's indeed easy to get lost over there.
You: How did you know?
Jesse: One is all-knowing, and with only a bit of calculation, one will be able to accurately capture the location of this fated one*.
*T/N: Jesse is a spirit medium that practices Taoism exorcism (as the successor of his family bloodline) and there's no direct translation for the words he used I'm so sorry the original words in CN are so funny it's as if he's talking like he's some sort of monk to the temple donor (MC) lolol.
You: Sprouting nonsense again I see, tell me frankly! How did you guess it so quickly? Oh right, have you actually been here before?
Jesse: That's right, only you would know me so well, missy. I'm really familiar with this place, so how about this, do you want me to become your exclusive tour guide? With my level of understanding, who knows I might actually pop an Easter egg for you somewhere.
You: How can you do that? Are you going to be a voice guide with a huge gap between Europe and Asia?
Jesse: Mm, it's quite romantic now that you think of it. You don't have to worry about this, as long as you tell me you wanted to, then I'll definitely be able to do it.
You: Sure, then allow me to trouble Tour Guide Jesse to provide some guide services.
Jesse: Now, raise your head to enjoy the orange-red and yellow buildings on the sides of the street.
These is the most iconic classical residential buildings in Seville, and it has kept the most traditional Andalusia style of the southern Europe.
You: Tangyuan, I didn't expect this from you at all, you're pretty much a professional tour guide huh, even remembering the colors of the buildings so well.
Jesse: Walk forward along this street, and you will be at the center of Santa Cruz. You can see the brick sculptures to gradually turn more gorgeous, that was originally the residence of the nobles.
You: Hey, this is too accurate--
Jesse: Now, the introduction to Santa Cruz tourist spots are complete, take a step backwards, and Tour Guide Jesse will gift you an Easter egg.
You: Walk backwards?
I didn't understand why he'd suddenly make such a weird request, but my body responded faster than my braincells, and I've already moved according to his instructions.
A second later, my slow brain has completely turned blank.
A familiar pair of arms have encircled my waist, and my back is tightly leaning against his firm and scorching chest. I fell into a sweet orange flower-scented trap.
??: Do you like this Easter egg?
The voice that was sounding a little distorted in the phone waves suddenly got accompanied with a loving breath, and has really appeared by my ear.
I turned around to look over, the scorching yet dazzling southern European sunlight immediately poured down, and brightened the youth's energetic eyes. His brows and the corners of his eyes are soaked in the light, as if they are the gods that have summoned the light.
Jesse drooped his gaze, and his smiling aquamarine eyes have been gazing at me without missing a moment.
My thoughts have completely frozen, and I extended an arm in a blur to pinch my cheeks. Yeah. Very well. There's a sense of touch, and I'm not dreaming.
Jesse: Alright alright, Missy, I promise this isn't a dream, don't torture your face.
He let go of his hand, and I immediately turned around to face him, and put on a stern expression.
You: Be honest now, why are you here?
Jesse: Ah? Ahaha, what a coincidence, this is all fate~
You: Ahem ahem, please answer seriously, Mr. Xia Tangyuan*.
*T/N: Writing this just in case, Jesse's Chinese name is Xia MingXing. Xia is his surname.
You: You've told me initially that you were preparing for a new show, why are you suddenly here?
I tried my best to keep my temperament to question him, yet there's something that exploded in my heart, the strong feelings of surprise and worriedness are now battling against each other, and I'm not sure if I should be laughing or to be angry.
Jesse chuckled lightly, raising both of his arms gesturing his surrender.
Jesse: Alright, I'll be honest, I've just made some tiny efforts. You told me last week before your departure that you wanted to play around in Spain for two more days. Then I started to arrange my later parts of works, working to be able to surprise you. Luckily I managed to finish the last part that required my confirmation, so everything has been going very smoothly.
He spoke so casually, but he must've been working overtime throughout a whole week. Only then I have noticed his slight dark circles around the corners of his eyes.
You: Dummy Tangyuan, don't overwork yourself...
Jesse: It's okay it's okay. I just thought that a certain missy would definitely need a tour guide. Because--
He purposely dragged his tone to leave me with a cliffhanger, I can almost feel my heart thumping heavily.
Jesse: I knew it, with your sense of direction, you'll definitely be so lost that you'll be dizzy.
I thought he'd even say something incredible... The tension immediately disappeared without a trace.
You: Xia Tangyuan! Don't you dare to talk badly about me, it wasn't as bad as you've exaggerated alright! I know how to read maps too!
I pretended to extend an arm to slap him, but it's grabbed when I was only midway there. I wanted to take my hand back, but my wrist is locked by Jesse that I couldn't move an inch. I pretended to show him puppy eyes, yet he's just grinning at me.
Jesse: Okay okay okay, it's me who was overly worried about you. But, since a certain child is still not improving in her sense of direction until this date, I am going to propose a condition.
You: Hey, coming up with conditions just like that?
Jesse: The condition is, stroll in Seville hand-in-hand with me.
His aquamarine eyes slyly winked at me, and my heart's defenses immediately got disarmed and surrendered.
You: What sort of condition is that even...
I muttered quietly, but I didn't take my hand back. Jesse's warm, large hands covered my palm, then held my palm tightly.
We continued to walk along the street, turning over the corners, and the sounds of bustling people began to grow louder. Both sides of the street are full of fresh flowers, with people sitting in pairs or threes at the shop entrances to drink while chatting.
A series of cheering sounds could be heard from the underneath of a parasol. We turned around to look over, and there were a few locals celebrating something in a toast.
They noticed our gaze, and happily raised their beer mugs. A Spanish man with thick eyebrows and large eyes whistled to us.
Spanish man: Hola! Young lad, are you here to drink with the girl in your arms?
His companions around him started a commotion.
Spectating companions: Antonio, you're trying to strike up a conversation with strangers again.
I don't understand Spanish, so I was completely confused. My hand was suddenly let go, and right after, I can feel a new weight over my shoulder. A faint scent wafted into my nose, and all of a sudden I'm now in Jesse's embrace.
You: ?!
Jesse: Thank you, but we have our traveling plan.
The Spanish man named Antonio seemed to not mind about being rejected, smiling as he pointed towards the end of the road.
Antonio: No problem! It's coincidentally the annual fiesta, so there are many fun activities around the city. You're welcomed to experience the Spanish enthusiasm!
After a moment, Antonio smiles as he walked towards us, and handed us two travel handbooks.
Antonio: The fellas from the travel bureau was just distributing the fiesta handbook along the street. You guys missed them just perfectly, thankfully you've met someone as helpful as me. Enjoy your holiday well with your girlfriend, young lad.
Just when Jesse was about to express his gratitude, it was unexpected for Antonio to suddenly show an expression of deep thoughts.
Antonio: Speaking of this, young lad, have you acted in--
Jesse: Thank you very much we will be heading to the fiesta right away!
Jesse sprouted all of the words in one go without panting, and immediately picked up my hand and left the spot as if we were fleeing from something.
Until we've walked through a street, Jesse has finally slowed down his steps.
Jesse: Phew, that was close, thank goodness I had good reflexes.
You: Escaping so quickly, could that man recognized you as Jesse?
Jesse: Probably yes, if it was just me over there, it's fine even if he recognized me. But now... I will not allow anyone to disturb our two-person world.
His tone was very confident, yet I can feel my cheeks burning slightly, so I quickly diverted my attention by bringing up another topic.
You: When did you master Spanish? I can't understand a single word they said, yet you can communicate so fluently with them.
Jesse: Since I've lived in Europe for a few years, and I've been to many places, so I've learnt bits of every language.
You: Eh? You've been to many places within those few years?
Jesse: Yeah, because of studies, tours, also...
Just when he was talking in excitement, he suddenly paused.
I raised my head and looked at him, his brows have lightly turned into a frown from his originally expressions in high spirits, but this short-termed dejection have disappeared right after without a trace, as if it was merely an illusion that I saw.
I can't help but to recall the time he was looking for his diary at home back then, and whenever Europe was mentioned, Jesse has always been silent about it.
Perhaps he really had something that it's difficult for him to say. After giving it some thought, I still changed the topic away.
You: You've already know so many languages, when do you plan to teach me?
Hearing that from me, Jesse's face is looking all triumphant like a little puppy all over again, I can almost see a fluffy shiba inu tail coming out from his back wagging.
Jesse: If you really wanted to learn, you can live with me for a couple of years, I'll teach you whatever I know.
You: Stinky Tangyuan, your idea is very dangerous, y'know.
I squinted my eyes as I looked at him, and coincidentally, Jesse is also looking back at me teasingly.
Jesse: I wasn't the one who was thinking the other way first okay.
You: ... Forget it, tell me first, what did you tell them?
Jesse: Do you wanna know? Lean closer, I'll tell you in secret.
The familiar breath fell onto my ears, and it feels a little ticklish.
Jesse: That man told me that it's coincidentally the fiesta for these few days, so there are many interesting activities in the city.
You: So that's what it was... I thought it's some kind of groundbreaking secret.
Jesse: *triumphant hmph* Translation service from Tour Guide Jesse isn't easily provided to outsiders. Besides you, anyone out here are outsiders.
You: ... Yeah right, stay pretentious.
The atmosphere became lighter now, we've been chit-chatting just like that, and all of a sudden we've walked to the end of the old street.
You: Coming next, where should we go?
I opened the travel handbook, and there are various activities pictured with explanations on it.
Jesse: I'll leave the decision to you.
[Choice: Where should we have fun at?]
Intimacy: Play with water guns in Amis Plaza
Listening: Bungee jumping in Victoria Canyon
Heartthrob (1): Participate the fiesta parade
Heartthrob (2): Dance flamenco
*T/N: The locations above are all most likely made up names... I can't find it on Google despite trying to search in various languages lol if you're from Spain or if you know Spain well enough please let me know!!
[Choice: Do Nothing]
We sat down on the long bench by the streets.
Jesse: Are you tired?
You: I'm still fine, it's just that my legs are a little sore.
Jesse stood up, and before I can respond to him, he has already knelt down before me, and started massaging my leg.
The big boy's warm palms have covered over my skin, gently massaging my leg with just the right amount of strength. In an instant, it felt like there were electricity passing through me.
A different kind of heat quietly climbed up to my cheeks.
You: No- No need to trouble you...
Jesse: Since I'm the one bringing you out to have fun, then of course I had to be in charge of ensuring your physical and mental health, all you need to do is just to focus and pick somewhere to have fun.
The bright smile is overly convincing, so I nodded in a silly manner.
Jesse: Still sore?
You: It's no longer sore, thank you very much...
Jesse: Haiya, why are you so polite with me, Jiejie~?
The way he purposely dragged his tone is just like a gentle touch of a feather brushing over my heart, it tickles.
We continued strolling along the streets. The sunlight languidly pours onto us as my head leans onto Jesse's shoulder. Jesse held my hand, and rubbed his cheek against my hair.
There are some secrets that are in tacit. I suddenly feel, to keep being hand in hand with him like this, and walking shoulder to shoulder like this, is enough for me to call it as happiness.
[Intimacy: Play with water guns in Amis Plaza]
You: There's a water gun drawn on this plaza on the map? Can we play water guns here?
Jesse leaned over, and began reading the description on the travel handbook seriously.
Jesse: You've guessed it correctly, it's written that there will be water gun wars at Amis Plaza throughout the fiesta period.
You: Then let's go there!
By the time we arrived there, the center of the plaza has already turned into an extremely chaotic, lively battle.
We walked along the sides of the plaza to search for the stall selling water guns. Right then, hearing a whoosh, I quickly dodged sideways, and a stream of water brushed past my dress.
On the plaza, a golden haired boy smiled bashfully to us, then turned around and ran away.
Jesse: Change spots with me, you'll walk on the outer side, so you can avoid getting injured before you enter the arena.
You: It's fine, didn't you see my 100-point reflexes earlier?
We arrived the stall as we spoke, and the owner enthusiastically handed two colorful water guns, and we immediately entered the arena.
Water streams are flying all over at the center of the plaza, with the streams of waters intercrossing before me as I dodged around while being left with no chances to return the attack.
Seeing a stream of water coming fiercely, I quickly moved sideways, but accidentally slipped. Just when I was unable to find somewhere to support myself, someone grabbed onto my arm.
My face crashed onto that big boy's firm chest, and thankfully I didn't fall onto the cold and wet floor. I raised my head in relief, and met Jesse's pair of smiling crescent eyes.
Jesse: Looks like we need to come up with a strategy.
Just before I can respond to him, he carried me up from my waist, and the scenery suddenly started to spin before my eyes. We swapped positions in an instant, and this reassuring back view is now shielding before me.
The upbeat voice can be heard from the front.
Jesse: Let me be your strongest shield, just follow me. You can fire as much as you want while standing behind me.
Right next, he focused on bringing me to dodge around, and I armed the water guns by his side, and fired with my heart's desires.
Streams and streams of water shot out from the gun, and we were in such great tacit that we have wiped all over the central of the plaza.
After defeating the 6th little boy that attempted to challenge us, Jesse turned around and lifted an eyebrow triumphantly.
Jesse: How's that, aren't we great?
You: Of course! If we were to cooperate, we will definitely not lose to anyone else.
That pair of aquamarine eyes smiled into crescents, and it seems like he's brewing some sort of sneaky idea.
Jesse: Alright, since we are already having victory in our hands, what's next will be the battle for the throne between you and I, Jiejie.
The alarm in me rang loudly, and I immediately grabbed onto the water gun tightly as I took a step towards the left. Jesse agilely turned around, and I was barely able to dodge the stream of water from his gun.
You: I knew you'd be planning to cheat!
Jesse: It doesn't seem like a good idea to have tacit at such times...
Jesse muttered quietly, and I took this opportunity to launch my attack. He jumped nimbly, and dodged it easily.
The crowd on the side saw the pair in tacit to suddenly have an internal fight. Not caring about others' sneak attacks, Jesse and I have started to chase each other just like how we did in the past.
We made 'friendly' exchanges, but the most that we managed to hit was just the hem of his shirt or my skirt, neither of us can land a critical hit to each other.
Jesse: Your reflexes have really improved.
After missing his shot for the 8th time, Jesse placed his water gun down.
You: I'd say the same to you.
I returned a praise to him, but my hand movements didn't stop. Jesse have immediately picked up his water gun to counterattack. Taking the opportunity of him turning around, I sped up on pulling the trigger.
With a "whoosh", the long stream of water shot out from the gun. Jesse was just halfway turning and wasn't able to dodge it, and was hit right into his chest.
Jesse: Ah!
He immediately covered his heart with a hand. I quickly ran towards him to examine him. Could the power of the water gun be so strong that it could hurt him that much?
By the time I leaned closer, Jesse's originally droopy eyes immediately lifted, and a smile exudes from his eyes.
You: You ill-hearted Tangyuan, acting like this of all times.
Jesse: Who said I was acting? This is the special effect after getting one hit K.O.-ed by Cupid.
Jesse straightened himself up, and smiled as he held my hand.
Jesse: It's your win this time, my Cupid.
You: ......
I averted my gaze shyly, and the staff holding towels at the side of the plaza has entered my view.
You: Let's go, it'll be very uncomfortable if the clothes are wet, let's dry ourselves over there.
After receiving the towel from the staff, I began wiping my half wet arms and skirt. Another silhouette holding a towel suddenly appeared before me.
Jesse: Can the loser enjoy a special consolation from Ms. Cupid?
You: ... Coy acts are strictly prohibited here.
Although saying so, but nobody can stay indifferent towards that pair of puppy eyes, so I took his towel.
Jesse's chest is wet now, his thin inner shirt is tightly stuck onto his chest, tracing his firm outline of his chest muscles.
[Try wiping the traces of water over his chest~]
[Outcome (1): Touching anywhere but the chest and shoulder area]
A tint of hear immediately flew onto my cheeks, making me to feel a little dizzy. So I simply wiped a couple of times and returned the towel back to Jesse.
Jesse: Jiejie, where have you been wiping...
You: I'm sorry...
My hair was ruffled, and the big boy in front of me still put on a smile.
Jesse: Forget it, there are just way too much wet spots, let's go back to the hotel for a change.
I nodded. Jesse picked up his backpack, and we walked towards the hotel.
[Outcome (2): Touching the chest]
[Touching his chest/ shoulder] The consolation from Ms. Cupid, I've received it now.
Perhaps it's because I was too aggressive earlier, that I've caused Jesse's chest to be completely drenched. I lightly wiped the traces of water on his chest.
The scorching feelings have seeped into my fingertips, and suddenly I can clearly feel that he's no longer that boy that I used to know, but have instead grown into a reliable man.
Jesse: Ahem...
An unnatural cough could be heard from above. Jesse's gaze is traveling around as he turned his face away slightly, exposing the suspicious redness over his ears.
Jesse: Uh, this will do...
It's rare for me to see him this shy, so after giving it a thought, I still stopped my impulse to question him further, and returned the towel to him.
You: I'm sorry, I must've gone too aggressive earlier. It won't do if you keep wearing wet clothes, did you bring something to change into?
Jesse: Of course, I've done a thorough preparation after all.
You: Let's go, then we'll go back to the hotel and get changed.
Jesse nodded, carrying his backpack, and we walked back to the hotel.
[Listening: Bungee jumping in Victoria Canyon]
You: Huh? We can bungee jump here?
I pointed the indicative diagram on the travel handbook to Jesse.
Jesse: Mm, the handbook said that the Victoria Canyon at the outskirts is a famous holy spot for bungee jumping, and the unique part about it is that it provides its one and only two-person bungee service.
*T/N: While I'm not sure where exactly is the 'Victoria Canyon' they are talking about, but on the outskirts of Seville there's indeed a place for bungee jumping called Aznalcóllar. But tbh the services are usually required to be booked in advance from what I've read online so I'm 50/50 certain that the place is a made up one.
You: Wow, sounds really interesting! We've been strolling long enough in the old city, how about we play there?
Jesse: Hey, it's bungee, isn't that something exciting! Will you be afraid?
You: Maybe a little... But they said that bungee is an unforgettable experience in a lifetime, so I really wanted to give it a try! Also it's a two-person bungee, since it's such a rare chance, as long as you're accompanying me, then I will not be afraid.
Jesse: Sure, then let's go!
We disembarked at Victoria Canyon station, and arrived the waiting room to put on the equipment.
Looking out from the window, the mountain cliffs on both sides are so high, and the river waters under the canyon is so clear that you can see its bottom. The bungee stand is standing right at the steel bridge.
When I really face this scene, I suddenly feel a little nervous.
Jesse: Are you scared? If you are scared, then let's not play anymore.
You: I'm fine, just a little nervous, I'll be fine after relaxing myself. We're already here, so I won't back down.
The familiar hands extends from my back. Jesse leaned close to my ear and deepened his voice.
Jesse: As expected from our Missy. I'll check your equipment for you.
[A voice clip will be played here]
We've chosen two-person bungee, the staff will come over to tie us together later.
Ah, hello, just tie us together like this.
With this it'll be convenient for you to hug me when you're nervous.
Please tighten a little more when you tie us.
Thank you very much.
Your hands are full of cold sweat, Jiejie, are you that nervous?
Take a deep breath, relax yourself, and if you're afraid, then hold me tight.
What to do to make you relax? How about I sing you a song now?
Then... How about a joke?
Mm, the last time we were cuddling this close was the time we were on the bed.*
*T/N: Reference from a permanent banner card (the kabedon one, I'll see when I can find time to translate it).
*MC hits Jesse*
Hey, where did your thoughts trailed to? I wasn't indicating any other meaning.
It's that time when we were at Paris, who asked you to kept chatting with Lance right in front of me...
Alright alright, I was just joking, I was just simply jealous back then.
Hey, where is your hand touching now...
You even wanted to punish me? But I didn't say anything wrong...
Ugh, don't touch here, it's a little ticklish.
It's not like you didn't know I'm ticklish...
Ah- haha! Tickly tickly is against the rules!
My ears are very hot? Well wasn't that because of you...
If this can help you to relax a little, alright then, it's not that I can't take more pranks from you anyway.
Since you're this nervous right now, I'll temporarily allow you to do anything you want for now.
It'll be fine as long as you can relax.
You aren't that nervous anymore? Then you can just hold me like this.
For times where we have only each other, I really hope for it to last a little longer.
[
Jiejie, you've brought me so much of good luck, this is my blessing in return to the goddess of luck.
I heard that the instant when we jump off from the bungee stand, our heart rates will be completely in sync.
Everything will be tied onto each other, and it is the most most romantic thing ever.
Now, hold me tight, we're going to depart!
Leave yourself to this blue sky with me, just like how we are heading to the future together.
Look, isn't this just like the scene of "You jump, I jump"?
Haha, you can always able to wash off some nervousness if you laugh more.
Don't be afraid, I will stay before you forever and ever, and watch over you.
[Voice Clip Ends]
Right at the instant when both of my legs left the bungee stand, the howling sounds of the winds brushed past, and my mind is completely empty as the scenery of mountains and waters are quickly inverted before my eyes.
I can only feel my deep breaths, and the reassuring warmth in my arms.
It feels like there's only me and him who's now tightly in my embrace left in this world.
Until the bungee ends, at the moment the staff helped us to untie the ropes, my legs are still feeling a little wobbly. Jesse took off his safety equipment and immediately knelt before me with a knee.
He held my weakened knee with an arm, and supported my back with another, and just like that, he carried me up.
Jesse: Do you still have strength to hold my neck?
You: Yeah.
I obediently crossed my arms over his neck.
Jesse: Let's go! I'll carry you back to the waiting room.
You: It's just so different to be two years younger, you're still full of vitality and jumping around in such a lively manner, yet I collapsed just like that.
Jesse: It's definitely not because of age, wanna know the reason why I'm always full of energy?
You: Hm?
Jesse: Because my source of energy is just right beside me~
Just like the scorching midsummer suns, the youth's eyes smiled into crescents.
Jesse: How great, we have completed an unforgettable challenge of our lifetime together.
[Heartthrob (1): Participate the fiesta parade]
The clear, crisp sounds of the banjo wafted along the winds by the riverbanks, the weave-like flow of people are passing between the alleys.
The ladies are donned in bright-colored dresses, with fans in red or green color opened in their hands, making themselves a good match with the old city buildings filled with flowers.
You: It's the fiesta!
I tugged Jesse's sleeve in excitement, he took the opportunity smoothly to hold my hand and pulled me back.
Jesse: Hey, you walked the wrong way, it's over there.
The November Seville is in its cooling autumns, the air feels a little humid, and it feels like it's fully soaked with vapor.
Jesse and I kept moving forward, and arrived Spain Square, and the upbeat music has entered our eardrums right away.
Regardless skin color or age, everyone here are dressed in costumes, and danced freely under the fast beats to express themselves fully.
You: Oh no, our attire aren't looking any fiesta-ish at all...
Jesse: Why not? It's exactly because there aren't anyone dressed casually over here, hence this outfit makes us unique. We are so discordant, that it completely matches the core of a fiesta!
You (laughing): What sort of logic is that?!
I smiled as I bumped his shoulder. The sounds of the drums beats are pacing faster, and it suppressed the conversational voices.
The entire city have completely boiled up, we slowly moved with the crowd, just like two sardine fishes squeezed in a sardine can.
Suddenly, an enthusiastic voice came from behind.
Staff: It's a day of complete freedom today, let's join the float parade!
The staff dressed in a magician costume raised his speaker, and in an instant, he's already standing before us.
He raised an arm and waved, and a colorful lottery box appeared from nowhere. Jesse and I looked at each other.
Staff: Both of you adorable youngsters, welcome to Seville Fiesta! Same old rules, as long as you manage to draw the Pierrot, then you can board our float in costumes to circle the town for free!
You: Float parade, costumes... sounds pretty good! Tangyuan, go!
I dragged Jesse as I pushed him to the lottery box.
You: Didn't you always say that you'll hit the jackpot in a single shot? Now is your time to shine!
Jesse: But, both of us has to draw Pierrots for it to work, right?
Staff: Of course not, this activity of ours are for couples, so drawing once will be enough!
The "magician" bend his arms, putting both of his thumbs together, and gestured a 'kiss'.
You (flustered): Couples?!
A strange emotion began to bloom in my heart.
Jesse: Oh~~~
Jesse purposely dragged his tone, grinning as he looked towards me who was hurrying him.
Jesse (teasing tone): Only for couples, then it can't be helped. Missy, do you still want to draw? I'll let you decide.
I looked at smiling "magician", then looked at Jesse that pretended to look serious.
You: That's too sly!
I complained silently, and decided to pull a trick back at him.
You: Sigh... Then that's too unfortunate indeed!
I sighed, and put on a helpless expression as I patted on Jesse's shoulder.
You: Tangyuan, then let's forget it, since they wanted couples, let's leave, let's leave.
Jesse (disappointed look): Eh?
I tugged Jesse and acted as if I wanted to leave. He didn't expect me to give up right away, and immediately followed behind me looking wronged.
Jesse: *coy sounds* Are you really not gonna reconsider for even a bit more?
Jesse kept turning back as he walked, as if his eyes are glued onto the lottery box.
Right on bait.
I suppressed the temptation to smile, and while he is still defenseless, I grabbed his arm and turned back in a hurry.
Tiptoeing, the corner of my lips brushed past Jesse's ear, and stopped just at 0.1cm away from the tip of his nose.
As the light halo pours through the leaves over our hair, I acted as if I kissed him.
Jesse: You!
You: Shh--
It's so rare for Jesse to turn speechless, like a computer that suddenly became unresponsive, he stood right on the ground, allowing his ears to flush in redness.
I held his arm intimately, and smiled brightly towards the 'magician' who's still hugging onto the lottery box.
You: Now, we are eligible to draw lots, right?
The 'magician' extends an arm and brushes past the skies, and gestured an invitation in a gentlemanly manner.
With his body responding faster than his brain, by the time Jesse has returned to his senses, a Pierrot is already in his hands.
Staff: Congratulations to the two of you! The goddess of luck has watched over you both!
You: Tangyuan, you're amazing!
Jesse: Of- Of course!
Jesse cleared his throat, yet he still didn't dare to look at me directly.
The 'magician' took a few steps backwards, and a luxury car splits the crowd and drove towards us.
Staff: The two of you, please get changed first. At 2PM sharp, the float will be parked at the central fountain, please board on time to participate the parade!
There are so much choices of apparels in the car, and their designs are bold and exaggerating.
You: This set isn't bad, a young king, it suits you pretty well.
Jesse: Then how about you? Young queen?
I smiled mysteriously, and poked away the gorgeous clothing on Jesse's hands.
You: You'll find out later.
I went into the changing room, and quickly changed into the black velvet minidress, then put on a cape over my shoulder.
The curtains are suddenly opened, and I pressed onto the witch hat on my head lightly.
You: How's it?
Jesse: ......
You: Why aren't you looking at me?
I poked on Jesse's face while pretending to look angrily.
You: Not talking? Fine, then I'll change it to something else--
Jesse quickly tugged my wrist, and his cheeks are suddenly a little flustered.
Jesse: D-Don't change, just go with this one.
You: Right, I still needed props!
I picked up a wand on the rack, and handed a longsword to Jesse.
He extends an arm to put my hair to the back of my ear, then adjusted my witch hat a little.
Jesse: A king wielded with a sword, and an innocent witch, what is this weird combination?
You: What's weird about it? The idol dramas are all acting like this now!
Jesse: Idol drama? Are you saying-- me and you?
You: Of course.
I squeezed the wand in my hand, and simply drew a circle in the air, and simply blabbered some spells.
Jesse: Hm? What does that mean?
You: Have you watched the idol drama that was viral across the country-- King turned Frog?
Jesse: Hey you!
I smiled as I stick out a tongue at him, carrying my cape and ran off the car.
Jesse chased after me hurriedly, we pushed and shoved each other as we followed the crowd back to the plaza.
There's still some time until the float parade, and the fragrances from the street stalls have attracted my footsteps.
Jesse: It's fried shrimps.
We went closer to the stall. The red prawns are entering and exiting the boiling oil wok, and enticed our taste buds in an instant.
Just when I was hesitating between getting mayonnaise or chili sauce, a voice from a young child interrupted my train of thoughts.
Little Boy: Miss Witch, can you take a photo for us please?
Following the sound, there are two kids that looked like they are around 7 or 8 years old, stuttering in simple English vocabularies.
The boy lifted the camera high up, with anticipation written all over his face. The little girl tugged my hem, and her round, deer-like eyes exudes her request.
You: Of course, but this mister's photography technique is good, how about letting him to take photos for you?
I spoke as I glanced at the great photographer Jesse to signal him to get ready.
Jesse: This is voluntary labor, y'know, aren't there any perks for me?
You: I'll leave the first fried prawn for you, that's good enough to you!
I smiled as I hushed him to switch on the SLR camera, and the children jumped and bounced happily.
Jesse: Don't go too far okay?
The children stood under the tangerine tree. Jesse adjusted the focus, and started counting down.
Jesse: 3, 2, 1--
The shutter sounded. The little boy secretly held the little girl's hand, and his eyes bloomed in smiles.
Jesse: It's done!
The children impatiently ran towards us, wanting to look at their photo together in the camera.
You: Right, it's the fiesta today, why did the two of you came out by yourselves? Are there no adults coming with you?
I looked around, but I can only hear the roaring sounds of cheers and dances.
Little Boy: Of course not!
The little boy lifted his chin triumphantly, and nimbly jumped down from the stairs.
Little Boy: Because today is my day of annual reunion with Belle!
The little girl named Belle lightly smacked the back of his hand, and nervously clenched onto her hem.
Little Girl: You promised not to tell anyone! Also you aren't allowed to bluff! You only moved to Malaga* half a year ago!
*T/N: Malaga is about 2.5 hours by car from Seville.
Little Boy: I wasn't bluffing!
The little boy averted his gaze elsewhere bashfully as he refuted quietly.
Little Boy: Half a year is already very very long to me! I wanted to come back everyday, wanted to go to school with you by bus, and play soccer in the park after class. Don't you miss me at all...?
Little Girl: Why wouldn't I?!
The children began to argue seriously.
Jesse was left with no choice but to squat down as he separated the two by picking them up by their back collars.
Jesse: Alright alright, talk in turns.
Little Boy: Mister King, hurry and make judgment for me!
The little boy stood upright, looking fully confident in his words.
Little Boy: We were neighbors in the past, and we never separated before. But half a year ago, my daddy had to work in Malaga, so I can only follow him and transferred schools. But I know Belle will miss me, so I have made a promise to her, that I will definitely come back to look for her during the annual fiesta!
Jesse (teasing): Why do I feel that you are the one that misses her?
Little Boy: That's not it!
The little boy flustered a little as if his secrets were exposed by Jesse.
Jesse: If that isn't the case, then why would you be brave enough to secretly come to another city just to see her?
The little boy panicked, stuttered, and it took him great efforts to finally come up with a sentence.
Little Boy: Hmph, Mister is also someone with a girlfriend, I didn't expect you to not understand at all!
Jesse suddenly became speechless, and touched his nose uncomfortably. This is his tiny little gesture that he always had whenever he's nervous.
The way this fella look embarrassed from time to time is actually pretty cute.
You: She's Belle, and what's your name?
Little Boy: Adam.
I leaned towards them as I handed the fragrant fried shrimps to the children. They immediately gave up their 'attacks' to Jesse, and surrounded me.
You: Then... Adam, do you know who I am?
Little Boy: I know! You're Miss Witch!
You: Correct! For each child that guesses correctly, Miss Witch will give a present. Little Adam and Little Belle, are you ready to receive your blessings?
The children frantically swallowed the food in their mouths, holding each other's hand, and stood properly shoulder to shoulder.
I raised my wand highly, and waved exaggeratedly in the air.
The tip of the want gently touched on the top of their heads, as if a certain mark has been imprinted on them.
You: This, is a spell called "Shadow's Company". From now on, no matter how far apart the both of you are, as long as you have a heart that thinks of the other, there will be a day where the two of you will be reunited.
Belle: Really?
You: Really.
The two children quietly looked towards each other, eyes gleaming brightly, just like they are filled with the entire starry galaxy.
The bells of the clock for 2PM has sounded, the sounds of horseshoe are approaching in the midst of the brilliance.
Jesse: The float is here!
The chauffeur dressed as a butler tugged the ropes slightly, and slowly stopped by the fountain.
The carriage is fully decorated with colorful flowers as the golden afternoon light reflects from it, looking dazzlingly dreamy.
The gazes from the children are filled with uncoverable jealousy. I gently held them by their shoulders, and pointed towards the float.
You: Wanna go?
Little Boy: Can we?
Jesse: Of course! What's so difficult about it?
Jesse smiles as he carried Adam and spin him in the air.
Jesse: Taking off--!
After the two children have landed safely onto the float, Jesse extended an arm to me. The warm autumn sunlight floats as it reflected his gentle gaze.
Jesse: Missy Witch, please.
I held my cape with a hand, and held onto his warm palm with another.
In a trance, it feels like it's a horse carriage heading towards the castle.
What's outside the castle is a giant yard, with sweet scents of champagne and lilies, and I'm about to hold onto Jesse's hand as we walk to the end of the red carpet.
Jesse: Why spacing out?
You: Huh? Nothing, it's nothing!
What sort of nonsense was I thinking...
My cheeks can't help but to burn as I averted my gaze in guilty conscience, and dragged Jesse to take a seat at the back.
The float slowly moved away from the plaza, and the tourists dressed up in costumes on the sides of the street have gradually lessened, but it didn't affect the levels of excitement for the children.
Jesse: Be careful, don't stick your body out of the carriage!
The deliberate laughter could be heard from the front of the carriage. Adam and Belle has been playing around, talking to the horse for a moment, and waving to the tourists in another.
The warm breeze brushes past my face, and I stretched myself comfortably, and suddenly had a weird kind of exclamation.
You: The children nowadays are too great, not even feeling bothered about anything just to meet each other.
Jesse: What's great about it? Wasn't I great when I was younger too? I can even climb into the windows to look for you!
You: Yeah, that's right, then in the end you were chased by granny from a street to another with a cane in her hand...
Jesse: Hey hey hey, hold it! I was trying to say, distance will not contribute to beauty. As long as I wanted to see you, I will depart immediately! No matter now or--
The words "when I was a child" got stuck by his throat. Jesse paused for a moment, lowering his head slightly, and quietly closed his eyelids halfway.
I can roughly guess the later part of the sentence, so I quietly held his hand, and tighten it bit by bit.
You: I've seen this phrase before, it says that the reunion of two person probably depends on 30% of luck, and 70% of hard work. But my luck hasn't been good, so I can only work harder. This time, you've traveled over half of an earth to look for me, so next time, let me be the one to look for you, okay?
Jesse suddenly clenched on my fingertips tightly. He turned sideways to look towards me, as if he's trying to confirm something from my eyes.
Jesse: The kind where you'll depart immediately?
You: The kind where I'll depart immediately.
Jesse: The kind where you'll not care about anything else?
You: The kind where I'll not care about anything else.
I smiled as I clenched my fist with a hand, and lightly punched onto Jesse's shoulder.
You: Adam isn't even as childish as you!
He turned his hand and hooked onto my pinky, and his lips curved up slightly.
Jesse: Well isn't that because there's someone that is willing to be childish with me!
I smiled with Jesse in tacit as we enjoyed this languid moment in the bustling fiesta.
Belle: Miss, hurry and look, there's a band performance!
Belle dragged my hand, and brought me to the rails of the float.
Unknowingly, we've arrived the last stop of the tour.
Right in front of the Seville Cathedral, a melodious sound of accordion resonated with the guitar, with a deep voice performing a Spanish ballad from the past century.
Bell tried her best to tiptoe and look out, but unfortunately the balloons tied on the sides of the float has blocked her vision.
Jesse: Wanna come up to my shoulder?
Jesse half-squatted, and Belle looked at me in hesitance. I nodded, and she immediately leaped in joy.
Jesse supported Belle, and held her up to his shoulder right away.
Belle let out a sound of exclaim, and immediately spread her arms open right after as she waved them in excitement, allowing the winds to mess up her long, brown-black hair.
Belle: Mister King you're great!
Adam: Hmph, what's great about that?! Once I'm grown up, I can carry you up too!
Adam is sounding a little unwilling to admit defeat, and Belle only smiled as she made a silly face to him.
Belle: Tell that again after you're a head taller than I am, otherwise who knows I might be the one carrying you instead!
The float drove on the shaded path, and the people in the tour are holding little baskets as they sprinkle the petals into the air.
The sprinkling petals are fluttering in the winds, like the rose-colored tunnel of time.
Jesse casually placed a hand over his sword hilt, turning sideways to look at me as he smiled in the rain of flowers, with his bright features showing under his hair.
Belle widened her mouth slightly, seemingly a little overwhelmed with the scene.
Belle: Looks like a wedding of the king and queen! Adam and I are your flower boy and flower girl!
Adam: But Miss is a witch!
Belle: So what if she's a witch? Which rule decided that only princesses can marry princes?
The afternoon sunlight is a little to bright. I secretly peeked towards Jesse, but only to notice he's also peeking at me.
Our gazes met, and moved away in an instant.
The redness behind my ears are slowly spreading from my cheeks to my neck, it's so hot that my heart began to beat a little faster.
Adam: Then in our wedding ceremony in the future, can we invite Mister King and Miss Witch to be our flower boy and flower girl too?
Adam pulled Jesse's hand, tilting his head, and asked an innocent question.
Jesse burst out in laughter, and ruffled Adam's soft hairs.
Jesse: Sure. If you don't mind two giant flower boy and flower girl, then we will definitely be there.
As we spoke, the float is slowly parking outside the town hall. The short city parade is now reaching its end.
We returned our costumes after disembarking, and returned to two ordinary tourists.
Jesse: Missy and I can only accompany the two of you until this point. Be good and wait for your parents to fetch you in the town hall, don't wander around anymore, alright?
The two children surrounded us, and hugged us looking a little sad.
Belle: Belle can't bear to see you go...
It's windy now. The parasol trees are now rustling by the riverside.
I tidied Belle's collar, and just when I was about to say goodbye, Jesse suddenly snapped his fingers.
Jesse: Let's take a group photo! Belle, Adam, look for a good spot at the lawn.
You: Then what about me?
Jesse picked up the SLR and faced it to me, turning the lenses, and letting out a sound of camera focus.
Jesse: Of course you have to stay and be the model of this photographer!
His lips curved up, as the glows of the sun poured onto him, bringing out the brightness in his light features.
That smile made me unwilling to move my gaze away, so I can only allow him to repetitively take photos of me as he adjusted the camera.
Jesse: Are you ready--?
Jesse placed the camera on a borrowed tripod, and set the timer.
The bright and warm sunlight leaked from the gaps of the leaves, leaving specks of light on the ground.
We counted the timer loudly, and the shutter sounded in a flash, locking the scene of Seville at 4.43PM.
As for the dummy Tangyuan, because he wasn't able to make it back to the team in time, there's only a blurry figure left in the photo.
You: You're just like a ninja! Shadow clone technique!
Jesse: It'd be nice if I'm really a ninja, I'll make 100 clones, and just send one out to work.
You: What about the remaining 99?
Jesse: Of course to accompany you!
You: Watch out, talk nonsense again and I'll seal your mouth with a spell.
We settled the children, and strolled along the riverbanks as we returned to the hotel. The sunset pours onto the lakes, glistening in bits of golden light.
Jesse stretched languidly, slowing down his steps as he gets closer to me.
Jesse: It's just a spell, I can do that too!
You: You don't even have a wand!
Jesse: Real wizards can cast spells even without a wand!
Jesse: Give me your hand.
Jesse opened my palm, and wrote something on it with his finger with a serious expression.
You: Xia... Ming... Why are you writing your name?
Jesse: To cast a spell of course! This spell is even more powerful than your "Shadow's Companion", it's called "Hearts as One". As long as you call my name in your heart, no matter how far away I am, I'll be able to hear you.
The fingertip caressed on my palm, and drew its final stroke.
Just when I was confused, Jesse has already held me gently by my waist, and brought me into his embrace.
Forehead to forehead, he lowered his voice, and looked towards me solemnly.
Jesse: If there are really miracles in this world, then it must be another form of melody from hard work. If I only keep waiting, the opportunity will slide away, so I will not wait anymore. I guarantee you, from now on, the word "Jesse" will be your strongest shield.
I lightly curled my palm. The warmth from that finger has spread into my heart, sour yet sweet.
You: Jesse.
Jesse: I'm here.
In the chilly autumn evening, the ancient city of Seville at this moment revealed its infinite tenderness in the sunset.
[Heartthrob (2): Dance flamenco]
Before I can think in detail, I can heard the sounds of wooden guitar echoed throughout the entire Calle Betis*. The melodious vibrato took a sharp turn, it's flamenco.
*T/N: The most scenic street in Seville, Spain.
You: Oh right, Seville is where flamenco started! Let me see if there are any troupe performances lately...
I habitually opened my phone app as my fingertips scrolled along the menu of performances.
My palm was suddenly emptied, so I raised my head in doubt, only to see Jesse holding my phone and waved it in the air.
Jesse: The most local flamenco will never be in your phone.
He raised a brow, and closed my phone's display.
Jesse: Follow me.
We hopped on a horse carriage, and the sounds of horseshoe entered the alley.
The road made of stone bricks has green grasses growing between its slits. The wheel travels over, and letting a crisp yet soft sound.
You: There's... flamenco here?
Jesse winked without saying a word, and the carriage stopped in front of a secluded old building.
I followed behind him, and walked to the second floor along the staircases. A signboard written with 'Corazón'* gloats under the dark shadows of the sunset.
*T/N: Corazón means 'the heart', courage, spirit, love, affection, or compassion or sympathy.
Jesse held my hand and entered the place after pushing the doors, seemingly very familiar with the place.
Jesse: Flamenco in tablaos* are the heart of Spain.
*T/N: Tablao is a place where flamenco shows are performed, or it's also used as a term for the platform floor for flamenco dancers.
You: Tablao? Are you talking about taverns?
A few round tables are hidden under the dark red spotlights. Rather than calling it a tavern, it looks more like a mini theater.
Jesse and I sat by the corners, and ordered two glasses of Sangria. There are raspberries, lemons and apples in my glass, with its refreshingly light scent slowly spreads in my mouth, even my entire body feels refreshed.
Only in a short moment, the red liquid in my wine glass has only a tiny bit left. Jesse had to hold my hand.
Jesse: Be careful not to be drunk in a while.
You: Will that happen? It doesn't taste like there's alcohol!
As we spoke, the red curtains behind the semicircle are slowly raised up.
On the tall chair, a young Spanish musician holds a guitar in his arms, his fingers gently strums over the strings.
Accompanied with a deep singing voice, the other person approaching while tiptoeing is a graceful female dancer.
Jesse: It's starting. Looks like we are pretty lucky today.
The dancer wearing a red flower on her hair straightens her chest, raising an arm and bent it as the ruffles of her long dress rolled in waves.
The folded fan in her hand spins delicately, the movements are clean yet light, adding some bits of confidence and amorous feelings that have accumulated over the years for her.
You: The vitality from flamenco is indeed immeasurable by age.
Jesse: If she heard what you've said, she'd definitely be happy.
You: She?
Seeing my confused reaction, Jesse pointed towards the graceful silhouette in red.
Jesse: She's Susana, my mentoring teacher in flamenco.
Jesse's gaze traveled to the bar table, his gaze exuding a sliver of reminiscence.
Jesse: Back then I was still studying, and I'm going to act in a Spanish musical. As the male lead, there will be a large portion of flamenco performance. I coaxed and persuaded for a long time, just so that Miss Susana agreed to enlighten someone like me who knows nothing. It's a pity that not long after the tour ended, she has retired back to Seville, and she will only perform in this tablao occasionally.
You: Compared to troupe performances, the flamenco here looks more free. Although I do not know Miss Susana personally, but I can feel-- to her, flamenco isn't just her occupation, but also a part of life.
Tailing Jesse's line of gaze, the dazzling stage spotlight pours onto Susana. She pinched her fingers, and her hem flies in the air.
The castanets in her hand accompanied by the highly provoking rhythm, it feels like she's going to tell all of her stories through her wild and unrestrained dance.
You: I don't know if I was overthinking, although the clothes are looking gorgeous, and the tempo is also cheerful-- But Miss Susana's expressions... seems to be carrying some coldness and sadness?
Jesse shook his head as he slowly twirls the glass wine in his hand.
Jesse: Your feelings are right. Flamenco is a form of art developed by the gitanos* when they were wandering. Whenever the night falls, they will light up the campfires, and immerse themselves in the heated dance. Although the fugitive life is difficult, but you can't let the good things at the moment down.
*T/N: Also called gypsies.
You: I see, so that's why there's a wonderful sense of discordance when the dance started.
Jesse: Mm. To gitanos, the pain and cold expressions are not performances, and their bodies that have been through many of life's challenges are also not performances. Flamenco is their language, it's the most direct manner for them to deliver their personalities. It's more like a natural way for them to express themselves.
You: Tangyuan, not bad, huh? Looks like you didn't waste your lesson fees!
Jesse: Hehe, at first I was also in a blur too, I didn't even understand the power within wandering...
You: Then what happens next?
Jesse supported his chin with a hand, and slowly took a sip of the fruit wine.
Jesse: What's next... Of course it's thanks to my extraordinary talent, that I have immediately grasped onto the core technique-- hey hey hey don't pinch me!
I poked Jesse's waist. He can't hold back from shrinking up as he laughs while begging for mercy.
You: Talk properly!
Jesse: Then, I've been spending time very often with the gitano street artists. We'll perform until midnight every day, then passing through the bustling plaza, returning to a tattered house. 10PM would be the liveliest, if we could get money, then we can eat, if we can't, then we can only stay hungry...
Jesse has always sounded so casual whenever he mentioned these happenings. I listened quietly, not saying a word.
Throughout all these years, he has been living overseas, traveling from city to city on his own, speaking in broken languages.
Actually, to leave Guang Qi itself, isn't it a form of wandering too?
Seeing me entering a silence, Jesse suddenly leaned his face closer and smiled.
Jesse: What's wrong, feeling bad for me?
You: Can't I?
Jesse stunned. He didn't expect me to admit it in such a straightforward manner, and have instead began to embarrassed.
Jesse: What's that called again... What I was doing is called experiencing life!
He's still telling his various sorts of experience during his years of study, yet my heart only felt swollen, as if it's soaked in a warm pool of water.
These fragments throughout the years of absence has made me realized, we have already been through such a long time in our own course of life.
Susana: Jesse!
Susana's voice in full of surprise has pulled me out from my memories.
Her English is exceptionally good, I can almost never hear a Spanish accent from her.
Susana: I saw you just now!
She stride towards us. Jesse and I quickly stood up, and did cheek kisses with her.
Jesse: It's been a while! Teacher, you're still the same as before, there wasn't a bit of change in you.
Susana: Time sure has passed quickly. It was already two years ago when we last met, it's the time you toured in Seville. Speaking of changes, why do I feel that you're different from the past now?
Jesse: Where was I different? Did I become more handsome?
Susana smiles as she took the rebujito served by the waiters, but her gaze have turned to me instead.
Susana: Whether you're handsome or not, you've got to ask this lady beside you.
Jesse let out a low chuckle, and gazed at me as well, as if he's looking for the answer to his question.
Under the warm lights, my cheeks are feeling a little hot.
Jesse: Teacher, it's such a rare opportunity for us to meet, why are you always embarrassing others, try embarrassing me too!
Susana: Of course I'd like to embarrass you. The dance steps that I've taught you, you can't possibly have forgotten them, right? How about giving it a go on the stage? There are many excellent female dancers here.
Jesse shook his head, suddenly holding my hand, and the corners of his lips curved up to a smile.
Jesse: Outside the theaters, I only have a single dance partner.
The warmth radiated from the palm felt exceptionally clear under these dim lights.
Susana smiled understandably, raising her wine glass and bumped into mine, then winked at me mysteriously.
Susana: I understand now, so... this is where Jesse has changed.
The music sounded once again as the musicians announce that the stage is open for all. It feels like there are dried wood added into the tablao's atmosphere, making this place to burn in greater heats.
Jesse turned his hand and tugged me, and I am forced to leave my seat.
Jesse: This lady right here, may I invite you for a dance?
He leans close to my ear, his warm voice overpowered the bustling dance floor.
You: I don't really know how to...
Jesse: It's fine, the spirit of flamenco is to have impromptu improvisations. Technique ranks the second, the most important thing... is the feeling.
Jesse uttered the word "feeling" from his lips so softly, it's a different kind of deep voice from the usual.
The guitarist's fingertips are as if they are pinching a flame, flowing with enthusiastic and sexy melody. Jesse held me by my waist with an arm, and gently caressed the side of my neck with another hand.
Jesse: Follow me tight.
He reminded in a light voice, and my fingertips faintly drew off from his jawline, and took half a step backwards.
Jesse walked behind me, holding my wrist with a hand, and with a slight tug, my breath suddenly got stuck by my neck.
Jesse: Very well.
My cheeks subconsciously heated up, and I pulled off some distance from him after turning a round.
Suddenly, unsure who has bumped into my shoulder, the sweet scent of alcohol spreads in the air.
Customer: Sorry!
The one who spoke is a bearded Spanish man.
Customer: Beautiful young lady, I must've scared you.
He showed his apology with his expressions, then gentlemanly gestured an invitation.
Customer: If you don't mind, you can change into a cleaner attire in my shop. It's just at the end of this street--
Just when I was about to decline his kind gesture, Jesse suddenly took a couple of steps forward, and blocked right before me.
Jesse: Thank you for your kindness, I think we can handle this ourselves.
The Spanish man shrugged, taking out a pen, but he hasn't expected Jesse to consciously open his palm as he smiles at him.
Customer: Since the two of you have insisted, well then. If there are any needs, you can always look for me at the shop.
The Spanish man smiled helplessly, and still politely wrote the phone number on Jesse's palm.
After sending off the episode, Jesse brought me to the attic of the tablao.
Jesse: Anyway, let's get changed first. But... there are only costumes for performances.
The gorgeous flamenco dress is hung on the clothing rack in a row. Jesse walks along the rack, and his gaze stopped at the two sets of dance costumes from the innermost of it.
His pupils shrunk slightly, then turned into a gentle gaze soon after.
Jesse: I didn't expect to still be able to meet an "old friend".
You: Hm?
Jesse: Oh, it's nothing. This is for you.
Jesse quickly picked two sets of clothing, and shoved one of the red dancing dress into my arms.
I was pushed into the changing room to change into the long dress. It's tiring to put it on, but it is extremely beautiful. It's just that I've tried a few times, but I still couldn't manage to tie the cross straps at the back properly.
Noticing that I've been dilly dallying for a long time, Jesse curled his fingers and knocked onto the wall of the entrance.
Jesse: I'm done changing, how about you?
You: Almost there--
After the Nth time of failure, I really had no choice but to poke my head out in embarrassment.
You: Tangyuan...
I opened the curtains, turning around and pointed towards the messy knots over my back.
Jesse was slightly stunned, and what follows is a chuckle.
Jesse: Let me do it.
The narrow changing room is suddenly filled with two person, making it to seem even more cramped.
I moved a little forward to make space for Jesse.
He leaned closer to my back, leaning a little forward, with his hair before his forehead brushing over, and it's slightly ticklish.
Suddenly, I can feel the strap at my back open bit by bit.
You: Why is it all untied?!
Jesse: It's already became a bunch of dead knots, if I don't untie them, how can I tie it back for you?
Jesse's voice is a little low, his warm breath could be felt over my ears.
I'm unable to refute, so I can only stare at the rice-white wall.
A breeze blows in from the slit of the entrance, brushing past my boiling skin. Each trace of touch from his cold fingertips could clearly be felt all along my spine.
Jesse's hand moved across bit by bit, and the places in contact are tingling and numb. I can't help but to shrink up, and let out quiet cries.
You: Is it done yet...
Before I can turn around, the crossing ribbons at the back is tightened in an instant.
You: !
I fell backwards, and bumped onto Jesse's chest. The immature yet domineering hormones have surrounded me completely.
He encircled me from the back, and slowly passing the ribbons from my waist.
In this cramped space, the warmth separated by the thin clothes is spreading with an amorous tension.
Jesse: It's done.
Jesse took a few steps backwards, and the mirror now reflects our figures of a tall and short duo.
Black and white with dark red, just like the flowers blooming in night.
I kept feeling this set of attire is a little familiar, but I can't seem to recall where I've seen it for all of a sudden. Just then, the upbeat music could be heard from downstairs.
Before I can manage to think well, Jesse has brought me back to the dance floor.
Jesse: Just enjoy it, don't overthink it.
The guitarists sat quietly in the shadows of the stage, accompanied by the sudden sharp turn of rhythm, the lightning-like dance steps are now tapping on the floor.
Jesse held my waist with an arm, and held my hand with another as we loosely made a spin.
I raised my hem and simply swing it away. The flying hem is just like a pomegranate flower in bloom.
Jesse: You look beautiful.
Jesse moved behind me, fingertips brushing downwards from my collarbone, gesturing me to raise my arms.
I walked forward, circled his neck, slightly lifting my head, and the breath is now rippling into misty airs over my cheeks.
Jesse: Do you trust me?
You: Eh?
Before I can respond to it, Jesse has already held me by my waist with both arms, carrying me up stably.
I subconsciously spread my arms open to maintain balance, allowing him to carry me as he spin me in the air.
The weightless body returned to the grounds, I hook onto Jesse's neck, and met his scorching gaze.
He locked me in with an arm, with a hand placed into the chestnut-colored long hair, forcing me to lean myself backwards.
You: Ugh--
I subconsciously raised my left leg, and hook it between Jesse's waist and hip.
While I was hesitating, I suddenly feel the lights have dimmed before my eyes, only seeing him leaning slightly forward, with his hot breaths blowing the hair of my temples.
Jesse: Your body is too tense, relax.
The unique scent on Jesse has intertwined with the warm scent of alcohol in the tablao. His expressions are just as usual, but his voice is slightly dull.
The strength on my back suddenly tightened, his left hand is holding the back of my knee as he leans his upper body down, with his lips almost brushing past my cheek.
Jesse: What are you dodging for?
The red dress flutters as Jesse's right hand slides down all the way from my back, his slender fingers now capturing my tightening thigh.
With his fingertips caressing on the skin, my breath gradually hastened, and I can't help myself but to stick closer to him.
The tips of our noses touched as the gleam from his gaze conquered me inch by inch, the lips exuded amorous warmth, making my rationality to turn shaky.
You: Put me down.
Jesse: I don't want to.
The dim lights floated over Jesse's face. He squinted his slightly dark eyes, and the smile that evokes from the corners of his lips is different from the past.
That smile exudes a casual tease, and a sliver of danger that is not easily detectable.
You: Tang...
He interrupted my speech, leaning his chin close to my ear, his damp breath slowly seeps into my skin from the hair over the back of my ear.
Jesse: Call my name.
You: Je- Jesse...
The name that I was able to call out so smoothly at usual times seemed to be stuck in my throat right at this moment.
Is it the effects of sangria? I'm feeling a little dizzy, and my vision is gradually filled with only Jesse.
The music is hot, the lights are hot, even the originally refreshing scent of orange flowers seemed to have been steamed, and now exudes a sweet and warm amorous feeling.
You: I seem to have... gotten a little tipsy?
Jesse: Then hold me tight.
Jesse held my hand and swung me out, I quickly make a turn, and was pulled back into his embrace again.
The winds carried from the hem of my dress have gently opened the drooping veils of the windowsill.
I raised an arm, wanting to cooperate Jesse's waist as it bends, but I didn't expect him to suddenly raise an arm and grab onto my wrist.
Our fingers intertwined as the red window curtains circled our fingertips, entangling us together.
I'm now welcomed with a scorching breath as if it's faintly teasing my nerves.
Jesse: Looks like, I'm a little tipsy too.
His lips curved into a smile, a thin layer of sweat appeared between his breaths, under his opened shirt is his moving Adam's apple.
I gazed away, but Jesse grabbed onto the curtain tangling on my wrist and moved it sideways, forcing me to look towards him.
Jesse: Focus, Jiejie.
Jesse brought me back to the center as we danced, the music gradually soothes down with melodious sounds of violins.
In Jesse's hoarse yet loving voice, I followed him as we raised and turned, and it feels like we are the cameras in movie shootings.
The memories flutter as they gradually joined into an image before our eyes. In a trance, it feels like we are slowly strolling on the axis of time.
Jesse: 10 years old.
Jesse quickly turned into the alley-- This is him slipping into the curving alley, lightly knocking onto my house's door.
Jesse: 16 years old.
Jesse taps his feet on the grounds accompanied with the sounds of castanets-- This is him busking everywhere, and making himself a name at every country.
Jesse: 19 years old.
Jesse bowed before the velvet drapery-- This is him waking on the red carpet, accepting the countless applauses and cheers.
Jesse: 21 years old.
Jesse gently caressed my slender fingers, and slowly pulled our distance closer.
My vision started to blur-- I know, this is his 21 year old self, and right now, he is walking towards me through the mountains and seas...
Jesse grasped every bit of the past and placed them in his flamenco, and displayed them all to me without reservations.
As if he's using the footsteps of time to tell me, during the years of us being absent in each other's lives, he has already grown and became someone better.
And now, he will be inviting me towards a distant future.
The violin's stretching tones has gradually stopped, and in the final ray of spotlight, Jesse and I fixed our movements.
There are two blurry shadows floating over the wall. We suppressed our panting sounds, immersing ourselves in each other's eyes.
Susana: Jesse, you're always full of surprises!
The light brightens up again. A song has ended, and the pairs of men and women that were in close reach have separated.
Until the sounds of applause could be heard from the bar, I have realized that this is a little tablao at 3PM, in Seville of Spain.
Bypassing the bustling crowd, we slowly returned to the dining table.
Susana: Seeing that you were dancing at ease, I knew you have already learnt to enjoy flamenco.
Susana slowly gazed over Jesse's dance attire, and the wrinkles at her eyes have soothed out to a relieved smile.
Susana: This was the performance outfit back in that year, right? Time has surely passed so quickly.
Jesse: Teacher, you still remembered! What a coincidence, the male and female protagonists' costumes are both still in the changing room, after putting it on, even I feel a little absentminded.
You: The performance outfit back then... No wonder! I was just feeling that this dress was really familiar, so I've actually seen it in your performance video!
Jesse stunned for a moment, then half-supported his head as he smiled at me.
Jesse: When did you watch it? Why didn't I know about it?
You: Ahem... I was just thinking that since I'm coming to Spain, I simply searched online.
Jesse: Then was my performance good?
You: Not bad, you're very into the character.
In that musical, Jesse acted as a noble son that was wandering, and he has dealt with many ladies of the upper class.
Jesse leaned a little closer, and lowered his voice.
Jesse: Then how about today? Was my acting good?
Remembering the flamenco earlier, my cheeks suddenly flustered, and picked up the fan on the table as I knocked on his head lightly.
Jesse took the folded fan, and pretentiously opened the fan with a swing.
Jesse: You can't simply use fans in Spain.
You: Eh?
Jesse: In upper class balls, fans are a socializing necessity for Spanish women. Sometimes when its not convenient to talk, and the folded fan will be used to deliver different messages to the men in the venue.
You: How do they deliver messages?
Jesse: For example, like this, to shake the fan in a fast pace, it means "hello".
You: Like this?
I imitated Jesse as I opened the fan, and the scent of wine wafted with the breeze.
Jesse: That's correct, very standard.
You: Then what are you laughing at?
Jesse curled his finger as he placed it over his lips, trying his best to suppress the curve in his smile.
Susana: That's enough, stop teasing her. This isn't a greeting, it's saying... I am deeply in love with you.
I stunned, and awkwardly looked away, with my cheeks burning in an instant.
In a panic, the fan slipped off from my hand, and dropped onto the floor.
Instead, Jesse seemed to looked at me calmly, and smiled even more.
You: Why are you smiling so creepily... There can't possibly be a different meaning from dropping a fan too, right?
He raised a brow without making any remarks, bending down to pick the fan up and returned it to my hand.
The moment he stood up, the voice that was purposely suppressed slipped past my ear, saying a phrase that came out of nowhere.
Jesse: Me too.
You: What...
I looked at Jesse dubiously, then towards Susana.
Susana didn't explain directly, the soft lights reflected in her eyes, and she seemed to be emotional.
Susana: Jesse, I'm really happy for you. Flamenco is a wandering form of art, while you can wander in life, but your soul has to find its place. Although you are still busy all over the world, but you are finally not a lone wanderer anymore. I think, you have found your eternal home.
Susana's gentle gaze stopped on me, then raising her wine glass, the amber-colored wine ripples in her glass.
Susana: To flamenco!
Jesse: To flamenco!
The waiter served us tapas. We continued to chit-chat until evening until we unwillingly left the tablao.
The night breeze is cooling, and the sunset has dyed the colorful walls of the city in red.
Jesse: How's your first experience of flamenco?
You: Um... passionate and open, just like this city. No matter how long has passed, it's still full of vitality hat can influence others.
Jesse: How can the vitality be comparable to yours?
You: Then in terms of influence it'll be incomparable to a certain tangyuan!
Jesse: Of course! Missy, don't forget to give me a 5-star review!
Jesse's eyes smiled into crescents as the fall leaf slides off from his shoulder and rustled by his foot.
We rode the taxi back to the hotel, and the scenery flies past before our eyes.
I tilted my head sideways, and the last ray of sunlight outside the windows quietly poured onto Jesse.
His side profile is no longer as round as the time when he was little, and instead exudes his strength and toughness.
You: Right, the "me too" that you said earlier, what does it mean? Are you trying to pull a prank on me again?!
Jesse: Wanna know?
Jesse curled his fingers signaling me to go closer as his lips curved into a smile.
Jesse: It's a secret.
You: Che, it's fine if you don't wanna tell, I can search it myself!
I made a silly face at him, taking out my phone as I quickly entered the keywords in the search bar.
Very quickly, various websites regarding Spanish fan etiquettes appeared.
You: In Spain if there's a lady dropping a fan from her hand, it means--
My fingertip scrolls through the screen, and under a clipart of the medieval era, a line of tiny words is clearly seen.
To slip off a fan from the hands, it means "I belong to you".
I belong to you. Hence, me too.
[Common Ending]
On the next morning, we boarded the train departing to the seaside town Ronda. The train traveled all the way along the cliffside, and wherever my gaze reaches are only the endless seas.
The train slowly stopped at one of the stations midway. I opened the windows and was immediately welcomed with the sea breezes, with the slightly salty scent of sea salt wafting along the winds.
The lush green meadows have reached its ends, and was cut off by the cliff. The further areas of my gaze now are seawaters from shallow to deep, connecting the land and skies together as they turn into a patch of endless azure.
You: It's so beautiful, it feels just like we've reached the end of the world...
Jesse: Did you know, there's another name of this place, and it's called "the most suitable place to elope". How does it feel to elope with me to the end of the world, Miss Y/N?
You: What are you saying...
Jesse: I'm serious about it. I was thinking this way when I boarded the flight. Even if it's the end of the world, it will not stop this trip that belongs to only the two of us. This time, whenever I can see you, I can finally depart to meet you right away.
The train lets out a whistle, and began to start moving slowly again. The winds are blowing loudly, so I turned around and forced the windows closed.
Jesse's palm covered on my palm that is now slightly cold from the sea breezes, his skin is scorching hot, just like that enthusiastic heart of his that he told me.
Jesse: Do you still remember that I've told you about me coming here for a tour two years ago?
You: Yep yep.
Jesse: On that night after the tour ends, I had a dream. I dreamt that the person traveling with me wasn't my colleague at the troupe, but it was you.
You: Tangyuan...
During these years of parting, whenever I'm unhappy, I've also thought about it too: it'd be great if he's still by my side. But each time I still angrily suppressed this thought.
So it's the same for him too.
Jesse: When I was playing around here back then, I was finding it dull, and there aren't much differences with most of the small towns in Europe. But when I'm traveling with you for these two days, I suddenly felt that the scenery here are indeed beautiful. Perhaps what's beautiful isn't the scenery, but having you by my side, and I can see you as soon as I turn my head over.
The train drove into a tunnel. Everywhere is drowned in darkness, and the pair of wave-like aquamarine eyes before me are gazing deeply towards me, as if they have been accumulating endless heat in them.
In a trance, there's something soft and damp sticking on my cheeks, and a familiar voice sounded by my ear.
Jesse: An elopement journey that only belongs to you and I, do you like it, Jiejie?
